DON'T BUY WHERE YOU CAN'T FLY

Vikash has some excellent thoughts on trains and planes in this current climate.

Minorities must not accept the argument that their civil liberties need to be restricted for the greater good. An open and free society must accept security threats of all forms as a cost of being free. This is why there is a right to bear arms protected by the constitution. This is why the criminal justice system places such great emphasis on procedure over outcomes. Our civil liberties trump their suspicions and anxiety. (Emphasis in original.)

Amen to that, brother.

JANUARY: IT'S IN THE CALENDAR
JaneG and I talked about this a couple months back

From the Chron, via Romanesko: Books By Insiders Chronicle the Stories of 3 SF Magazines.

Jim Ledbetter's book, "Starving to Death on $200 Million a Year: The Short, Absurd Life of the Industry Standard," to be published in January by PublicAffairs, should reach a broader business audience, according to its editor, Paul Golob.

"I don't think of it as a media book," Golob said. "This is a book about how not to run a business. The Industry Standard had revenue of $200 million in the year 2000, and it was bankrupt in the year 2001. Clearly, that has to be a good story. It just happens to be a magazine."

Yes, there are lots of great reads that came out of TIS. If you're good, I might even tell you some of mine.

In the meantime, Jim's paper can be found here.
